“Connection is real. Whether it’s seen our unseen. Connection is that invisible thread that we have with one another.”
“In Between the Seams” is our 3rd full-length production that will open at the end February at Oakland’s own Laney College Theater.
In a world where the meaning of connection is rapidly evolving and ever-changing, we explore the value and challenges behind connection; with ourselves, our environments, and each other. Through a diverse mixture of movement and poetic prose, our all female dance company, Mix’d Ingrdnts and youth company Mini Mix’d, present a 75 minute performance that will push boundaries and broaden people’s understanding of the importance in human connection.
We have until February 1st to raise $12,000 to cover production costs.
-Theater rental, production and labor costs
-Studio rentals for rehearsals
-Costumes for both companies, Mix’d Ingrdnts and Mini Mix’d
-Major collaborating artists: Architect Jeremy Harris and Photographer Marisa Aragona who are responsible for designing and constructing custom sets and also curating show projections both still image and video components
-Guest artists, performers and musicians
-Sound Engineer
-Lighting Designer
-Stage Manager
-Promotional materials such as show flyers, posters and program
-Photographers and videographers for documentation
-Additional technical equipment such as projectors and cameras
-Mix’d Ingrdnts Company members. All dancers in the show work 8-10 hours a week choreographing, creating, collaborating, training and rehearsing
Risks and challenges
We face challenges everyday not knowing if people will like our art, understand our message we are trying to get across, or if it will ignite a fire under people’s need to make a difference. We take risks in the kind of content we choose to put out there in making meaningful and powerful work that provokes thought and affects those around us.
Each dancer in the company and every artist involved has their own individual community to share this opportunity with to make this experience an impactful show and together as a group we will put in the effort to reach our goal.
We want to sell out all 3 shows reaching about 900 people total. By the end of January we will have hosted auditions to pick 6 local artists (dancers or musicians) to be in one of 3 pre-show performances at our show.
Other ways we will be raising funds in the next few months for “In Between the Seams” will be through community engagement. We will be hosting a community Waacking battle on January 23rd and on February 13th we will be having a Cultivation Night, where we will be premiering work from our show to a small select audience hoping to inspire future contributors. Both events will take place at Destiny Arts Center in Oakland where our Company is one of three current Resident Companies.
In our mission to reach a larger community after the show, we are having a Bay Area school tour between March and May to perform excerpts of our show and talk to students about who we are and why we are becoming a pillar in the community. If we can inspire the youth and remind them that they have a voice, while simultaneously celebrating their individuality, we can impact the world.
